Meaning ‘garden’ in Latin, much of the produce on the menu at Horto is grown in the restaurant’s own abundant kitchen garden. Located within the spa at Rudding Park, by day this charming venue is an informal spa café but things are very different in the evening. The feel is contemporary, with modern art on the walls and the latest tunes playing. Staff are smartly dressed, tables are bare, and the dishes on offer change and evolve depending on the seasons and availability of produce grown on site, including herbs, salads, vegetables, edible flowers and fruits. Techniques are up to the minute and flavour combinations simple and clean but with fantastic depth. Witness a starter of cauliflower tart with Berkswell cheese and walnut, or perhaps garden beetroot with almond and mustard. Main course might bring east coast lobster with Isle of Wight tomato and summer squash, or salt-aged Yorkshire lamb, ewes' curd and gem lettuce. To finish, Bruce Farm strawberries, honey, elderflower and yoghurt makes for a refreshing finale.
