About The area
Discover County Tipperary
Tipperary has some of the country’s lushest pasturelands, and this is reflected in the prosperity of the farming community, and in the region’s towns and shopping centres.
The main natural features are the Galtee and Knockmealdown Mountains, and the River Suir that cuts through the heart of the county. Tipperary is rich in archaeological remains, including the famous Rock of Cashel, dating back to a thousand years before St Patrick was born. There are also plenty of castles and ancient ecclesiastical buildings to explore.
Considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in Ireland, the county town of Tipperary, Clonmel, dates back to the 12th century. It was once a stronghold of the important Butler family, the Earls and Dukes of Ormonde. The best way to see the town’s historic buildings is via the Heritage Trail. Highlights include the arcaded Main Guard of 1684 and the blue-painted Town Hall on Parnell Street. Hearns Hotel is where Italian Charles Bianconi (1786–1875) established in 1815 what would become the most famous bus company in Ireland.
