Our View

Built in 1854, the Great Laxey Wheel, 22 metres in diameter, is the largest working water wheel in the world. It was designed to pump water from the lead and zinc mines, and is an acknowledged masterpiece of Victorian engineering. The wheel is also known as 'Lady Isabella', after the wife of the then Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man.
