This renovated, 17th-century traditional pub and contemporary dining inn stands roughly equidistant from Midhurst, home of the Cowdray Estate and British polo, and Petworth, with its National Trust mansion. Travellers stopping at this inn will find tastefully furnished rooms with beamed ceilings, log fires and peaceful patio and garden. Those seeking a truly local pint will find real ales from Langham, brewed a mile away, and Sussex Gold from the Arundel Brewery. Lighter meals include linguine carbonara with bacon, mushroom and parmesan; and open sandwiches, ciabattas and salads. From the mains selection there might be rolled belly of pork, bubble-and-squeak, kale and mustard cream sauce; or pan-fried fillet of sea trout, leek and chive crushed potato, buttered spinach and white wine cream sauce. Leave room for one of the tempting desserts, perhaps white chocolate rice pudding, rhubarb compôte and rhubarb syrup.

Discover West Sussex

Divided from East Sussex back in 1888, West Sussex is so typically English that to walk through its landscape will feel like a walk through the whole country. Within its boundaries lies a wide variety of landscape and coastal scenery, but it is the spacious and open South Downs with which the county is most closely associated.

If you enjoy cycling with the salty tang of the sea for company, try the ride between Chichester and West Wittering. You can vary the return journey by taking the Itchenor ferry to Bosham.

West Sussex is renowned for its many pretty towns, of course. Notably, there is Arundel, littered with period buildings and dominated by the castle, the family home of the Duke of Norfolk, that dates back nearly 1,000 years.
