Hart Barn
“A stunning mix of contemporary design and original features.” - VisitEngland Assessor
Hartsop, Cumbria
Our Inspector's view
Hart Barn is a stylish contemporary retreat for two tucked away in a tiny hamlet in the heart of the magnificent Lake District National Park, just 7 miles from Ullswater and 3 miles from the southern tip of Ullswater - the second largest lake. Incredibly spacious with over 800 square feet of living space spread over three floors, this property has a real wow factor and has won many awards. The location and views are spectacular and the walks from the door amongst the best in the Lakes. The barn was painstakingly rebuilt by the architect owner and has a vaulted green oak structure over the stunning bedroom and double height living area. This is a beautifully designed 21st century home combined with the indulgence of a 5 star boutique hotel. Linking all three floors is the main feature of the house: a unique spiral staircase constructed from old oak railway sleepers and polished stainless steel. However, it is the attention to detail and the owners desire to seek out and support local artists and crafts people which makes Hart Barn special. The best of contemporary Cumbrian design coupled with the owner’s passion to restoring old buildings, this is a totally unique and stylish retreat in the heart of glorious Lakeland.

Discover Cumbria
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes'. This beautiful countryside once inspired William Wordsworth and his home, Dove Cottage, in Grasmere is a popular museum. Another place of literary pilgrimage is Hill Top, home of Beatrix Potter, located near Windermere. Tom Kitten, Samuel Whiskers and Jemima Puddleduck were all created here.
Much of Cumbria is often overlooked in favour of the Lake Distirct. In the south, the Lune Valley remains as lovely as it was when Turner painted it. The coast is also a secret gem. With its wide cobbled streets, spacious green and views of the Solway Firth, Silloth is a fine Victorian seaside resort. Other towns along this coastline include Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport. Carlisle is well worth a look – once a Roman camp, its red-brick cathedral dates back to the early 12th century and its 11th-century castle was built by William Rufus.
