Founded as a memorial to Manchester cotton-magnate and millionaire John Rylands, this is a public building, and also the Special Collections Division of the University of Manchester. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. It extends to over one million books, manuscripts and archival items representing some fifty cultures and ranging in date from the third millennium BC to the present day. Changing exhibitions throughout the year, and a full public events programme.
