It is thought this inn was originally built in the 15th century as a Devon longhouse for the stonemasons rebuilding the village church. On the western flanks of Dartmoor, it is likely that it became a pub by the early 17th century and a further floor was added. It is now as much a draw for its range of local real ales and ciders as it is for its food, much of it sourced locally. The pies are popular main dishes, but other choices could be venison casserole with Stilton dumpling; chicken curry; lamb rump with mint and gooseberry gravy; and grey mullet fillet with prawn and saffron risotto.
