Behind the facade of a Grade II listed townhouse in Mayfair lurks something a little surprising. Built at the end of the 18th century, the place may look at first glance like a bastion of traditional values, but within you'll find a venue as avant-garde as any in the capital. With an approach to interior design that doesn't so much push the envelope as shred it into a million tiny pieces and use it as a decorative feature, super-cool Sketch makes quite a style statement beneath its soaring cupola roof: an explosion of candy pink designer glam from designer India Mahdavi mingles with Brit artist David Shrigley’s whimsical cartoonish artworks filling the walls, and well-heeled, beautiful people taking selfies on low-slung, candy-pink sponge finger-like barrel chairs and banquettes. Über-chef Pierre Gagnaire's food doesn't stint on creativity either, with vibrancy, sheer skill and a sense of fun evident throughout, opening in contemporary European mode with a super-light ham tart with celeriac, sweetcorn and pink grapefruit fondue, or perhaps prawns macerated in orange manzanilla gel with red quinoa and amaranth cake. Sophisticated technique, along with an intuitive grasp of flavours also distinguishes a main-course of clarified butter-poached sea bass served with tender squid and bitter green herbs in a dramatic black squid ink sauce enriched with parmesan cream. If you’re in the mood for something meaty, duck breast might be flavoured with rosemary and supported by an eclectic cast of red cabbage jam with blackcurrant, cured Bigorre pork fat, salmis sauce, crunchy pommes gaufrettes, the tart kiss of tamarillo sorbet, and whisky gel. Desserts are also highly technical workouts: a pink meringue shell is filled with Manjari 64% dark chocolate mousse and ice cream, raspberry sauce, toasted hazelnuts, cocoa jelly and strawberry ganache. The wine list is stacked with expensive thoroughbred bottles that are more than up to the job of enhancing the complex flavour profiles of the food.
