This historic pub is situated in part of Gamul House, named after Sir Francis Gamul, a wealthy merchant and mayor of Chester who built it in 1620. It is reputedly where Charles I stayed when his troops were defeated at Rowton Moor, shortly before the king’s final flight to Wales. Relax with a Thirstquencher ale and enjoy the pub’s numerous period details, then choose from a menu of hearty favourites such as pork and rabbit rillettes, prune purée, cornichons and toast; pearl barley risotto; and Spanish pig stomach and white bean stew.

Nestled between the Welsh hills and Derbyshire Peaks, the Cheshire plains make an ideal location to take things slow and mess around in boats. Its moist, crumbly texture and slightly salty taste mean it goes well with fruit, peppers or tomatoes. As well as the usual white, there are also red and blue veined varieties.
