Our View

A 1725-built village pub that goes from strength to strength after its relaunch a couple of years ago. The stylish bar ‘in all its solid-oak glory’ has a wood-burning stove and the original stone-flag floor – here you’ll find West Country ales and ciders, and award-winning Luscombe organic soft drinks and wines from Sharpham Vineyard just down the hill (tours are available). Ingredients sourced from in and around Totnes appear on a seasonal menu listing home-cooked dishes such as chargrilled wood pigeon breast, salt-baked beetroot and redcurrant reduction; wild venison and red wine sausages and wholegrain mustard mash; and 8oz rump and frites. Waving the flag for the desserts section might be sticky stout cake and butterscotch sauce; or salted caramel, fruit and nut tart. Simple snacks, sandwiches and salads are available at lunchtime. Doors from the dining room lead to a sheltered courtyard.

About the area

Discover Devon

With magnificent coastlines, two historic cities and the world-famous Dartmoor National Park, Devon sums up all that is best about the British landscape. For centuries it has been a fashionable and much loved holiday destination – especially south Devon’s glorious English Riviera.

Close to the English Riviera lies Dartmoor, one of the south-west’s most spectacular landscapes. The National Park, which contains Dartmoor, covers 365 square miles and includes many fascinating geological features – isolated granite tors and two summits exceeding 2,000 feet among them.

Not surprisingly, in Dartmoor the walking opportunities are enormous. Cycling in the two National Parks is also extremely popular and there is a good choice of off-road routes taking you to the heart of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Devon’s towns and cities offer stimulating alternatives to the rigours of the countryside.
