Our View
Dating from the 17th century, the family-run Horseshoe is a genuine old English pub in the pretty village of Ebbesbourne Wake. The original building has not changed much, except for a conservatory extension to accommodate more diners, and there's a lovely flower-filled garden. Beyond the climbing roses are two rooms adorned with simple furniture, old farming implements and country bygones, linked to a central servery where well-kept cask-conditioned ales are dispensed straight from their barrels – Bowman Ales Swift One, Otter Bitter and Palmers Copper Ale – plus real ciders too. Good-value traditional bar food is offered from a varied menu. Freshly prepared from local produce, dishes include trout terrine; half honey-roast duck with port sauce; fresh fish bake; and lunchtime sandwiches. The home-made pies are a firm favourite – try the wild boar and apricot steak or go for the steak and kidney.
