Manor House is an impressive place, transformed from dereliction by the owners who almost entirely rebuilt it. Originally built for a local mill owner, these days it’s a contemporary masterpiece and a truly impressive addition to the West Yorkshire scene, usefully handy for Leeds and Manchester, and a fascinating mixture of period detail and sumptuous modern design. Everything has been carefully planned and arranged to provide a cossetting, intriguing and subtly glamorous backdrop to your short break or celebratory weekend away. The Lantern Room, with its stunning floral ceiling, exposed brick walls and fab forest green banquette seating, is a suitably decadent setting for a short menu (four choices at each course) of very seasonal modern British dishes, produced with skill from superb ingredients, some of which are foraged locally. This is proper fine dining – precisely and accurately prepared with great technical skills well to the fore and supported by a diverse wine list, arranged by tasting style. The food all looks very pretty, but there’s a real depth of knowledge and understanding behind the likes of a beautifully presented starter of cured Whitby mackerel, beetroot, damson, apple and horseradish. All the different elements are painstakingly arranged, but rest assured, you can be confident that the mackerel is full of fresh flavour, and the distinctive damson elements of the dish are well balanced by the apple and horseradish, with textural contrast from the beetroot. Next up, wild peppered venison loin, muscade, pumpkin, girolles, chestnuts and chocolate is a top notch winter choice, with succulent venison enhanced by a deep and silky chocolate sauce. Finally, a technically accomplished dish delivering a big visual impact, the 70% Valrhona chocolate, peanut praline mousse, salted caramel and raspberry sorbet is a classic selection of flavours making for a sophisticated dessert.
