The Old Inn
“Heartening simplicity at the village inn” - AA Inspector
Our Inspector's view
Despite the narrow roads that lead into it on either side, Drewsteignton was once a major staging-post on the coach route from Exeter to Okehampton. A slip of a Dartmoor village to the modern eye, it boasts Duncan Walker's white-fronted, 17th-century inn, a contemporary restaurant-with-rooms that has made the place a destination. The ambience is homely, with striking modern artworks, and the menu of assured, classically based cooking offers a wealth of enticement. European notes could be as inimitably French as grilled sole fillets with morels and Madeira, followed by Dexter beef pot-au-feu, while quality shines forth from a fillet of halibut crusted in lemon and parsley, served with braised celery. Traditionally conceived desserts punch above their weight as in a textbook tarte Tatin, or a billowing apricot soufflé with vanilla ice cream. A compact wine list is impeccably chosen and complements the heartening simplicity of the approach.

About the area
With magnificent coastlines, two historic cities and the world-famous Dartmoor National Park, Devon sums up all that is best about the British landscape. For centuries it has been a fashionable and much loved holiday destination – especially south Devon’s glorious English Riviera.
Close to the English Riviera lies Dartmoor, one of the south-west’s most spectacular landscapes. The National Park, which contains Dartmoor, covers 365 square miles and includes many fascinating geological features – isolated granite tors and two summits exceeding 2,000 feet among them.
Not surprisingly, in Dartmoor the walking opportunities are enormous. Cycling in the two National Parks is also extremely popular and there is a good choice of off-road routes taking you to the heart of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Devon’s towns and cities offer stimulating alternatives to the rigours of the countryside.
