This city-outskirts inn has extensive views from its beer garden across the Cheshire Plain. Inside, country-house formality meets cottage homeliness – heavy beams, open fires with precision-cut logs, and well-stocked bookshelves. Lunchtime offers sandwiches, wraps and focaccias, while evening diners can expect a good choice of fish dishes such as whole roasted sea bass, wild rice, pak choi and red Thai sauce; and meat dishes, perhaps toad in the hole; or venison loin; plus steaks, pies and vegetarian options such as tomato and roasted red pepper risotto.

Although Cheddar has become Britain’s most popular cheese (accounting for over half of the cheese sales in the UK), it was once Cheshire cheese that was in every workman’s pocket back in the 18th century. Its moist, crumbly texture and slightly salty taste mean it goes well with fruit, peppers or tomatoes. As well as the usual white, there are also red and blue veined varieties.
