Our Inspector's view
Affluent Stockbridge has quite a concentration of restaurants and bars, this being one of the longer established. Access is down stone steps into, in their words, a ‘decadent grotto’. Modern Scottish cooking reigns on the weekly changing fixed-price menu and on the rolling carte, typified by Gressingham duck breast with crisp duck confit, and grilled halibut with Scotch quail egg.

A couple of miles east, Portobello is Edinburgh’s seaside area, with a long stretch of golden sand that attracts droves of city dwellers on sunny summer days.
