Opened in 1992, the museum has won the Irish and British Museum of the Year Awards. It has two permanent exhibitions as well as hosting temporary and travelling exhibitions throughout the year. The multimedia 'Story of Derry' exhibition has reopened following extensive refurbishment. There is also an exhibition about the Spanish Armada which includes artefacts from a galleon shipwrecked in Kinnagoe Bay in 1588.
