White House Hotel
“Creative cooking and sea views in an island retreat” - AA Inspector
Our Inspector's View
The island's only hotel is a real time-warp experience, dispensing with TVs, phones and clocks. Every table has a sea view in the Conservatory Restaurant, where pin-sharp technique and peerless raw materials combine to impressive effect in the contemporary menu.

About The area
At a mere 1 and a half miles long, by half a mile wide, Herm is a very small island. Fewer than a hundred people reside here, although during the summer season around 100,000 people visit – mostly for the day, and not all at once. Unsurprisingly, tourism is the island’s main industry.
There aren’t any cars allowed, so people get around mainly by foot. The human history of Herm goes back to the Mesolithic period (thousands of years BC) and archaeology fans can see plenty of Neolithic tombs, most of which were excavated during the Victorian era.
Most people who stay on the island go for a self-catering cottage or take a tent. There is one hotel on Herm, the White House, and as part of the island’s policy of relaxed calm it doesn’t have TVs or clocks. Although much of the island’s coastline is granite, here are plenty of beaches to enjoy, including Shell Beach and Bear’s Beach. Alderney Point is to the north of the island, and does quite literally, come to a very pronounced point.
