An oak-panelled, baroque 16th-century merchant’s house at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery makes for a magnificent and atmospheric setting for a meal. Scottish-themed flower arrangements on tables add to the splendour, with the assured cooking showcasing traditional and contemporary dishes with native produce, especially seafood, at the fore.

A couple of miles east, Portobello is Edinburgh’s seaside area, with a long stretch of golden sand that attracts droves of city dwellers on sunny summer days.
