Hotels listed on this site are either part of the AA Hotel Scheme or the VisitEngland Hotel Scheme.
Joining the AA Hotel scheme
There are 4 different membership levels for Hotels.
Full AA Membership
This involves an overnight inspection testing all services, resulting in a star rating if the criteria is met. When you apply to join the scheme, you’ll be inspected and rated by one of our professional inspectors who will visit overnight as a mystery guest. The following morning the inspector will discuss their visit and give you constructive feedback.
As well as your establishment having a page on RatedTrips.com, you'll have access to AA logos and a range of signage, and marketing benefits. Full scheme members are eligible for our Hospitality Awards, including Red Stars (Inspectors’ Choice), Silver Stars and Breakfast Award.
Associate AA Membership
This is a marketing-only option for establishments already rated by one of the tourist boards (VisitEngland, VisitScotland, VisitWales or Tourism Northern Ireland). No inspection will take place and AA Associateate Membership ceases should membership of the tourist board cease. You could then market your establishment as an AA X Star Associate member.
Advertised with Visit AA Membership
This membership level involves an overnight inspection testing all services, but no star rating is awarded. A Rosette award may be awarded for culinary excellence.
Advertised without Visit AA Membership
This is a marketing-only option without an inspection. Your establishment will feature on RatedTrips.com as 'AA Advertised' and without a star rating, and there are a host of marketing benefits too.
Joining the VisitEngland hotel scheme
This scheme is offered as full membership or accredited only membership.
This scheme is designed for hotels formal accommodation with full service. Alternative schemes include the VisitEngland Guest Accommodation Scheme, for less formal accommodation, often without full service, and the VisitEngland Budget Hotels Scheme (see below), for hotels offering low-priced accommodation with limited service. Businesses using the word ‘hotel’ as part of their name should be assessed under the hotel scheme.
This level of membership has been designed to provide accommodation businesses with a robust and dependable method to demonstrate that they are operating in a safe, clean and legal way. Initially launched in 2010, the scheme has been regularly revisited to ensure it covers the latest legislation.
VisitEngland works with destinations and local assessment organisations to offer this accreditation scheme on a local level. However, if a business is in an area without a local scheme, they can apply to VisitEngland directly.
Entry Level Accreditation offers reassurance that the accommodation is safe, clean and legal, but does not include a star rating or quality accreditation, which are available through one of VisitEngland’s range of quality assessment schemes.
Visit England Budget Hotel scheme
If you are part of a branded hotel group offering affordable accommodation with services more limited than those usually expected in a hotel, you can be assessed as part of the budget hotel scheme. Budget hotels must show consistency of service and facilities within their own group so that all hotels meet an internal brand standard.
