Overview
Built as an imposing Norman fortress, Durham Castle was for centuries the home of the Prince-Bishops, some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. In Victorian times it was transformed into a place of learning and became home of University College, the founding college of Durham University. Today Durham Castle is still a college, but also a Grade I Listed Building and a Museum that visitors can discover through regular guided tours.
