"A well-preserved Norman castle that serves as an important local landmark"
Overview
Built by William the Conqueror to guard an important crossing on the River Medway, Rochester Castle was the scene of a 13th-century siege by King John. The siege left the castle partly ruined, but it was rebuilt soon after and remained a working fortress until the 16th century. There are attractive castle gardens, a shop and a picnic area.
