Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Overview
Opened in 1977 and set in the beautiful grounds and gardens of a 500-acre, 18th-century country estate, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is one of the world’s leading open-air galleries of modern sculpture – and Yorkshire’s artistic jewel. There’s always something new to see with temporary exhibitions throughout the year in four magnificent indoor galleries. The visitor centre provides useful all-weather facilities, including a good restaurant, Kitchen Café serving hot and cold food and the ubiquitous shop. Even for those who don’t ‘get’ the art on offer, the park is fantastic to walk around, with excellent vistas of the valley, lakes, estate buildings and bridges. Admission is ticketed with parking included in all tickets. You can even take your dog on the outdoor cultural tour.

About the area
Everybody knows that Yorkshire has some special landscapes. The Dales and the Moors first spring to mind, but what about West Yorkshire? That’s Leeds and Bradford isn’t it? Back-to-back houses and blackened mills… Certainly if you had stood on any of the hills surrounding Hebden Bridge a hundred years ago, and gazed down into the valley, all you would have seen was the pall of smoke issuing from the chimneys of 33 textile mills.
