Exploring the South Downs

The UK’s newest National Park covers an area of 636 square miles and extends extends for over 100 miles from the edge of the ancient cathedral city of Winchester in the west, to the dramatic 530ft (162m) dazzling white cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, in the east.

Evidence of prehistoric settlement is found almost everywhere on the South Downs. The rolling chalk grasslands are criss-crossed by ancient tracks and footpaths, watched over by a series of Iron Age hillforts.

The 99-mile (160km) South Downs Way National Trail runs the length of the park, and there is a wealth of other public footpaths which will help you thoroughly explore areas such as the Ashdown Forest and the Devil’s Dyke.
