The Samling★★★★
"Unrivalled location on Lake Windermere with views to die for."
Overview
A storied 18th-century house set on 67 acres of grounds which enjoys an elevated position overlooking Windermere, and arguably captures the finest view from a restaurant in the whole of the lakes. The name derives from the Cumbric for "Gathering" , apt given the open welcoming feel here. The spacious, beautifully furnished bedrooms and suites, some in adjacent buildings, are thoughtfully equipped and all have superb bathrooms. Public rooms include a small library, a lounge with some quite special artwork (Dali and Picasso are represented) and a state of the art restaurant with chefs table in a contemporary, Lakeland slate-clad extension. Service is polished, but also friendly and personal.

About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills.
