"Innovative food close to good walking country"
Overview
Dating back to 1788, the Red Lion is located on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park. It retains plenty of character – the original wooden beams and stone walls are complemented by discreet lighting and comfy leather armchairs which add a contemporary edge. Striking black-and-white photographs decorate the walls, whilst local bands liven up the bar on Thursday evenings. Meals are served in the bar and bistro, or beneath umbrellas in the large garden. Seasonal produce drives the menu and the chefs make everything, from sauces to the chips. Typical choices might start with scallops, butternut squash purée, peanut brittle and pink grapefruit; followed by beef skirt, oxtail croquettes, bone marrow, mirepoix and roast onion purée; or halibut, seaweed butter, kimchi and crab dumplings.

About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
