Stephen Joseph Theatre
Overview
Daring theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph founded Britain’s first theatre-in-the-round here in 1955, and it moved to its present home – the old Odeon Cinema – in 1996, when still under the artistic directorship of playwright and farce-master Alan Ayckbourn. Today it’s one of Britain’s finest small theatres, and known for showcasing innovative new plays. With a 404-seat auditorium in the round and a further 165-seat cinema, it offers a fantastic programme of shows throughout the year.
About the area
North Yorkshire, with its two National Parks and two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is England’s largest county and one of the most rural. This is prime walking country, from the heather-clad heights of the North York Moors to the limestone country that is so typical of the Yorkshire Dales – a place of contrasts and discoveries, of history and legend.
