Castle Drogo

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
India tea baron Julius Drewe's dream house, this granite castle, built between 1910 and 1930, is one of the most remarkable works of Sir Edward Lutyens, and combines the grandeur of a medieval castle with the comfort of the 20th century. A great country house with terraced formal garden, woodland spring garden, huge circular croquet lawn and colourful herbaceous borders. Standing at more than 900 feet overlooking the wooded gorge of the River Teign with stunning views of Dartmoor, and delightful walks. There is currently a battle underway to save Castle Drogo from major water damage. This means the roof needs replacing, the stonework needs repointing and over 900 windows need refurbishment. This struggle to save the Castle means that visitors can experience up-close, the important and fascinating building work that is taking place.
