Clearwell Caves Ancient Iron Mines

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
These impressive natural caves have been mined since the earliest times for paint pigment and iron ore. Today visitors explore nine large caverns with displays throughout. There is a colour room where ochre pigments are still produced. Deep level excursions are available for more adventurous visitors, but must be pre-booked. There is a Christmas fantasy event in December when the caverns are transformed into a magical world with Father Christmas and a seasonal story.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
