Caister Roman Fort
Overview
The Caister Roman Fort remains give a fascinating insight into the town’s defence connections. Here, a Roman naval base stood for some 150 years or so until the Romans withdrew from Britain. Infantry and cavalry personnel would have been stationed here, as well as sailors. It occupied an island that has since been covered with silt, at a point where four rivers, including the Waveney and Yare, met. There would have been barracks, workshops and stables. Now managed by English Heritage, the partially excavated site includes the south gateway, a town wall built of flint with brick courses and part of what may have been a seamen’s hostel.

About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
