Temple Newsam Estate
Overview
Temple Newsam is celebrated as one of Yorkshire’s great historic houses and estates, and there’s something for all the family at this wonderful site. Set in 1,500 acres of stunning parkland to the east of the city, the mansion contains outstanding collections of fine and decorative art, and there is a rare breeds farm which proves very popular with children. The gardens around it are extensive, and justly famed for their rhododendrons and azaleas. You can stroll down to the lake, to admire the grounds landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Revel in the planting of the walled garden, which holds national collections of delphiniums, phlox, asters and chrysanthemums. There are two playgrounds, one of which is designed to be accessible to children with special needs and two shops selling gifts, local produce and plants. The cafe serves dishes made with meat reared on the farm, as well as homemade cakes.

About the area
Everybody knows that Yorkshire has some special landscapes. The Dales and the Moors first spring to mind, but what about West Yorkshire? That’s Leeds and Bradford isn’t it? Back-to-back houses and blackened mills… Certainly if you had stood on any of the hills surrounding Hebden Bridge a hundred years ago, and gazed down into the valley, all you would have seen was the pall of smoke issuing from the chimneys of 33 textile mills.
