Inverness Cathedral

Overview
Properly the Episcopal Cathedral Church of St Andrew, this massive building, with its twin square towers, dominates the west bank of the River Ness in the town centre. It was designed by Alexander Ross and built between 1866 and 1869. Its pinkish colour comes from the local Tarradale sandstone used in its construction. While the exterior is rather nondescript, the Gothic interior is perhaps more appealing. The decorative oak choir screen dates to 1923, and the unusual Victorian white marble angel font by James Redfern is a copy of a Danish sculpture, but given the facial features of donor Colonel Learmonth’s wife.
