The Cathedral of St John The Baptist

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
This is the second largest Roman Catholic cathedral in England, its status recognised in 1976. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott junior in grand and lofty Early English style, and built on the site of the former town prison. Work started in 1884, and the cathedral was completed in 1910. A memorial in the north isle commemorates Polish people who died in World War II, and the Polish link continues today. The modern Narthex (2010) beside the cathedral houses an educational centre, visitor centre, café, and shop.

About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
