Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery
Overview
Norwich Castle was built between 1067 and 1075 as a royal palace for William the Conqueror, with its magnificent stone keep added in the 12th century. In the 14th century, the castle was the city gaol, and remained so for some 500 years. Take a minute to look at the castle mound; it is the largest in England. Today the castle houses a fascinating museum with displays of art, archaeology, natural history, Lowestoft porcelain, Norwich silver and a large collection of paintings, with special emphasis on the Norwich School of painters. A display of British ceramic teapots is a pleasant diversion. You can take a guided tour of the dungeons and battlements (with great views of the city), plus there’s a programme of exhibitions, children’s events, an art gallery and evening talks throughout the year.

About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
