The Textile Conservation Studio (NT)
Overview
The National Trust’s only in-house conservation treatment facility, the Textile Conservation Studio was founded in 1976 at Blickling Hall in Norfolk. Since 2002, the Studio has been based in a specially converted, award-winning building on the Blickling estate. As well as ensuring that the Trust’s own significant textile collection is properly maintained, the Studio is also run as a commercial enterprise. The team of professionally trained and accredited conservators undertake a range of activities, including estimates, condition surveys, advising on preventive conservation, display, storage, routine care, disaster planning, emergency treatment, studio-based practical conservation treatments and on-site work. The team treat all types of historic textile, with particular expertise offered in the care of textile furnishings, woven tapestry, embroidery and costume. The amassed experience of the staff, and the specialist equipment and facilities, make the Studio one of only a handful of places in the UK where large, complex projects can be worked on with complete confidence. The Studio can be visited by appointment only. See website for details.
About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
