David Mellor Cutlery Factory and Design Museum
Overview
The factory is round because it was rather ingeniously built on the foundations of the former village gas holder. It was the brainchild of the late David Mellor, a key figure in British design with an international reputation as designer and manufacturer, particularly famous for his design of cutlery. The Factory is just outside Hathersage on the road to Bakewell, where you can also see examples of Mellor’s ubiquitous street furniture. All the stylish cutlery is manufactured in the purpose-designed modern factory. The Round Building, designed by Sir Michael Hopkins, won many architectural awards when it was built in 1990.

About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
