Abernethy National Nature Reserve
Overview
A stunning mosaic of ancient Caledonian pine forest, moorland, bog and mountain plateau, the Abernethy NNR is home to some of Scotland’s most spectacular wildlife. Probably the best-known site is Loch Garten, where its most famous summer visitors are the majestic fish eagles – the ospreys –which have nested high in the tree tops since their well-publicised return in 1959. The best way to see the ospreys is to visit the RSPB’s Osprey Centre at Boat of Garten, which not only provides fantastic views of these magnificent birds on their nests, but even closer insights via non-invasive CCTV cameras. But there’s much more to Abernethy than its ospreys. Other pinewood residents include the charming red squirrel;Scotland’s largest grouse, the spectacular capercaillie, crested tits and yellow siskins, and the RSPB runs guided walks that will introduce you to these. There is also an Explore Abernethy visitor centre in Nethy Bridge.
About the area
Apart from the Orkneys and the Shetlands, Highland is Scotland’s northernmost county. Probably its most famous feature is the mysterious and evocative Loch Ness, allegedly home to an ancient monster that has embedded itself in the world’s modern mythology, and the region’s tourist industry.
