Blawhorn Moss National Nature Reserve

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
The Blawhorn NNR is a secret oasis of open, windswept moors hidden in the lowlands between Glasgow and Edinburgh. You can delve into its soggy secrets without getting your feet wet by using the boardwalks which cross the 8,000-year-old raised peat bog, which is rich in lime-green sphagnum moss and insectivorous sundews. Highlights in early summer include the nodding fluffy-white fruiting heads of bog cotton and the harsh cackle of red grouse as they explosively bolt from the heather, while hunting short-eared owls soar above. On a summer’s day, the colours of the bog really come to life; the rich reds and oranges sparkling in the sunlight with darting dragonflies and damselflies adding their iridescent hues. Butterflies also abound, with green-veined whites and meadow browns and the occasional northern arches. On late summer mornings or evenings, you might also hear the distinctive bark of rutting roe deer.
