Picturesque Broadhembury

Walk directions

Turn left up the road, steeply uphill. As it levels, turn right on a bridleway through a small parking area. Follow this path – with wonderful views west – along the perimeter of the airfield. Keep left at a fork and ascend to a wooden gate.

Turn right along the edge of the airfield, eventually keeping to the right of the clubhouse. Follow the tarmac drive right over a cattle grid and keep ahead to join a road.

Turn right along the edge of the airfield, eventually keeping to the right of the clubhouse. Follow the tarmac drive right over a cattle grid and keep ahead to join a road.

Turn right; pass Barleycombe Farm (left), then follow bridleway signs right through a gate, downhill on a fenced path, then left through another into a field. Walk along the bottom edge. The path curves right through a stand of beech trees and a metal gate, then runs straight across the next field towards the top edge of woodland. Keeping the fence on the right walk through a gate onto a fenced path, with a conifer plantation right.

The path ends at a lane, turn right downhill towards Broadhembury. At St Andrew’s Church cross the road and go through the churchyard (no dogs allowed), then under the lychgate and downhill to find The Drewe Arms (left) for a welcome break.

To continue the walk, from the pub, turn left down the main street to reach the bridge and ford. Turn right up the lane, past the playground and up the hill, eventually bearing right.

Just past two thatched cottages (right) go left over the stile in the hedge and up the field, aiming for a stile in the top left corner. Go over that and straight ahead, crossing a stile by a gate to the left of the farmhouse. Keep ahead up the left field edge and cross another stile; then right, round the edge of the field, and over two a stile into a small copse. Pass a stile into the next field; bear slightly right to locate the next stile in the beech hedge opposite which takes you into a green lane.

Turn right and walk uphill with conifers left and fields right, until a metal gate leads to another and back onto the airfield.

Turn left along the edge of the field. Follow the bridleway left through the first gate, and continue back to the road. Turn left downhill to find your car.
