To the top of Rubhal
The car park at the start of this route is right by Benbecula's landfill site, but don't despair – things quickly improve. (Hen harriers and short-eared owls have even been seen rising above the small hill of Stiaraval, just across the road from the car park.) Cross a cattle grid and follow the gravel track east towards Ruabhal.
The track is clear and bends gently through heathland. On either side, but particularly the left, you can see peat cuttings, before the path comes close to the edge of loch Ba Una to your right.
At the small quarry on the left, dug out of the foothills of Ruabhal, is a small cairn and a wooden post. Turn left uphill here, beginning the climb up the slopes of Ruabhal. The track is always clear, but alternates between firm gravel, and marshy, boggy and stonier sections.
After 330 yards (300m), where you pass a tapering fence to your left, there are several boulders that make a good place to rest and take in the views south. The last section of the climb is steeper but barely 160 yards (150m) in length. The path levels off and climbs across the summit to the cairn and trig point.
From the summit you can see a clear path heading out east among the lochs. You could strike out down the eastern flank of Ruabhal, but as the hillside is often boggy and rugged, the best route is actually to retrace your steps downhill along the path to the quarry. Here, turn left and walk around the base of Ruabhal for 1.25 miles (2km) east, to the point where the track forks (GR NF836534).
The path beyond here becomes more rugged and leads eventually to Roisinis, some distance east – so retrace your steps from the meeting point of the paths, and walk back along the track to return to the car park.
