Cumbria Way: Dungeon Ghyll to Rosthwaite
Start behind the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. The route west is along the wide, flat bottom of Mickleden, skirting a wall of scree and rock nearly 2,000ft (610m) high, which sweeps up to Pike o’Stickle. Cross a small footbridge to a sheepfold and cairn.
Turn right and climb the very steep, glaciated valley side. Fortunately, the path is well-constructed, zig-zagging artfully to keep the gradient within reason. At the top, walk through an upland hollow full of glacial moraines. Walk straight ahead, passing the cairn atop the ‘hause’, or pass.
Descend into the deep trough of Langstrath. The path switchbacks down steeply alongside the cascades of Stake Beck. At the bottom, take the level but rough track down the valley, with Langstrath Beck on the left. After about 2 miles (3km) the beck turns sharp left as Greenup Gill joins it.
Bridge Greenup Gill and turn left for 1.75 miles (2.75km). Pass Stonethwaite Bridge after a mile and, after another 0.75 miles (1.25km) or so, cross a second bridge to reach Rosthwaite. Turn left up the road to reach the Scafell Hotel; the direct continuation of the Cumbria Way turns right almost immediately (sign for car-parking).
