Walk directions

From Inverarnan take a path alongside A82 and cross the bridge into Beinglas camp site. Follow the site's right-hand edge to rejoin the West Highland Way.

The path runs along the back of the site, picking up a roughly tarred track up-valley. When the track turns downhill, keep ahead on a rougher path. You pass through several fine groups of trees, including oak, alder and birch, on this stretch, and although the road is never far away, it is surprisingly secluded down here. The railway from Glasgow to Oban and Fort William is just the other side of the road. On the same slope is the Clach-na-Briton, a stone said to mark the ancient boundary between Brythonic, Scots and Pictish territories.

Derrydaroch means ‘the oak grove’, though these trees are less numerous nowadays and there are as many pines. The river is crossed here and the path takes the other bank for 0.5 miles (800m) before passing under the railway through a ‘cattle creep’ in which it is best to take your pack off and carry it low down. Head to the right, to a culvert under the A82. The rough path strikes uphill to join a track along the line of the old military road.
