Queenswood Country Park and the River Lugg
From the car park, pass under the Border Oak building. In 27yds (25m) turn left on a track just before ‘Lime Avenue’. At a fork, take left path and keep six very tall, straight Redwood trees on left before turning half-left to find a track beyond the Redwood Grove. Cross a ditch to fork left. Turn left onto a wider path and in 11yds (10m) left again. Continue for 328yds (300m) and at a 4-way junction, turn left. Walk for 0.25 miles (400m), ignoring a crossing path after 328yds (300m), to turn left and follow the well-trodden path round until it meets with another to rise uphill. At a 5-way junction (with a bench), take the 3rd right uphill. In 328yds (300m) turn to a clump of pines and within 33yds (30m) right to a viewpoint. Here, on a clear day, you can see towards the Malvern Hills, Ledbury, Orcop Hill and the Black Mountains.
From the viewpoint, take the widest path uphill and at a junction with a stone to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, take 2nd left to a clearing and a sign, ‘Oak Avenue’. Leaving the sign behind, walk up between the avenue of trees for 50yds (45m) and take the path on left. Continue round, ignoring a turning to the left, and at a junction with a rusty gate, turn right. In 219yds (200m) turn left to pass through the ‘Autumn Garden’. Beyond the garden turn onto a tarmac drive and follow this to the right for approximately 328yds (300m), keeping forestry buildings on right. Cross the main road (with extreme care) to a bridleway opposite.
In 656yds (600m) turn right onto a woodland track. Continue on this for 0.25 miles (400m) passing through a metal gate with cattle grid. Keep a second cattle grid on left and follow the line of a copse, then keep the line across the field to a gate. Keep to the right-hand field edge to pass through two further gates. Beyond, go half-right to the top right-hand field corner. Follow the sunken lane to a gravel track and turn right to the road. Turn left.
In 82yds (75m) turn right at a waymarker. Beyond a small paddock, take a gap in the hedge by tall poplars to cut across the field behind school playing fields, towards the church. Into the churchyard follow the path behind the church to a gate in the far corner. Cross a footbridge and turn right, signposted ‘The Vern ½ mile’. Follow the riverbank to a further footbridge and turn half-right (beyond you can see Queenswood Country Park). Cross the field to a 3rd footbridge 16yds (15m) from the riverbank. Climb the bank to a double stile and turn left into a field. Cross the field on a well-trodden path, keeping a house and poplars on your left. Take a path between hedges to a lane by ‘The Vern’.
Turn left following the lane for 219yds (200m) then left again across a way-marked stile. Follow the right-hand field edge for 0.5 mile (800m) to come out against stock fencing for 109yds (100m). Cross a stile on left to follow right-hand field edge. Take a stile/footbridge on right just before field corner and cross the field back to the blue footbridge over the Lugg, returning to the church. Walk back through the churchyard and under the Lych Gate. Walk forward to go right then left along the lane past the school for a road junction by the war memorial.
Turn left and keep on the road for 547yds (500m), climbing past orchards and with views of Bodenham Lake Nature Reserve. At a driveway on the right take the waymarked footpath uphill through trees. In 656yds (600m) take the right fork just past a hide chair and ladder. At a junction with a cherry tree (marked with a white arrow directing straight on) turn right, then right again after 109yds (100m). At a wide gravel turning area, turn left and retrace your steps along the bridleway back to Queenswood Country Park.
