Exploring Glasgow and the Clyde Valley

Glasgow is arguably Scotland’s youngest city, although it was founded some 1,500 years ago. Most of what we see now is more recent, and its nightlife is legendary. It’s also one of the country’s most ethnically diverse cities and has been for a couple of centuries. On top of that is its sporting heritage, and the gorgeous architecture, and the constant need for an umbrella, but we don’t have all day.

Glasgow is set in the Clyde Valley, part of the course of the River Clyde that starts up in the Lowther Hills, some 50 miles to the south. On its meandering way out to the Firth of Clyde, the river passes through some verdant countryside, and the area was once known as the ‘fruit basket of Scotland’ due to the number of apples grown there, as well as pears, figs, plums and gooseberries.

Within the Clyde Valley lie the counties of South and North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, East Dunbartonshire and West Dunbartonshire. All have their share of history, from the Stone Age to the Industrial Revolution and beyond, and they all reward the visitor with their dramatic landscapes, abundant flora and fauna and welcoming market towns and villages.
