"Terrific period inn with top-notch menu"
Overview
The market town of Kirkby Lonsdale retains immense character and charm, beautifully evidenced in the classic 17th-century building that is The Sun Inn. An ideal base from which to explore the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, the pub burrows back from a pretty pillared frontage into a mix of low-slung beams and cosy alcoves focussed on a feature fireplace. The owners are keen supporters of local produce; expect beer from the town's microbrewery to accompany menus inspired by the surrounding countryside. A starter of wild garlic tortellini with mushroom broth complements a main of braised lamb neck with black garlic mash, carrot and rosemary.

About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills.
