The Bird in Hand
"Stylish pub with a warm atmosphere and good food"
Overview
Just to the west of Bristol, this pub's clean lines haven't smothered its former village-pub feel. To the left is the bar area, home of St Austell Tribute and guest ales; to the right the dining area. Here, with fish and shellfish delivered daily, meat sourced locally where possible, and much neighbourhood foraging, is a monthly-changing, modern British menu listing rib of beef, roast bone marrow, herb butter, triple-cooked chips; hazelnut and parsley crusted gurnard; and potato and cheddar gnocchi with autumn squash. Home-made snacks include Scotch eggs and chicken Caesar croquettes.

About the area
Somerset remains rural and unspoiled, and ever popular areas to visit are the limestone and red sandstone Mendip Hills rising to over 1,000 feet, and by complete contrast, to the south and southwest, the flat landscape of the Somerset Levels. Another popular spot, the Quantocks, once the haunt of poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, are noted for their gentle slopes, heather-covered moorland expanses and red deer.
