"Refined cooking and wonderful forest views."
Overview
The Cottage in the Wood occupies a splendidly lofty position huddled between the trees in the Whinlatter Forest 1,000 feet above Keswick in the northern Lake District. A makeover has given the dining room an uncluttered contemporary look with a large bay window at the far end that makes the most of the views overlooking the woods and sets the scene for five- and seven-course tasting menus of modern, flavour-driven dishes. Among the highlights, pheasant is served with a punchy broth scented with oils of mint, Aleppo pepper and lemon, while pork cheek is braised to tenderness with quince mead and matched with polenta, Taleggio and shiitake mushrooms.

About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills
