Overview
Alex Dilling at Hotel Café Royal is certainly off to a flying start with its ground-zero West End location in one of the world’s great hotels with wonderful Grade II listed interiors at the Piccadilly end of Regent Street. Climbing up the grand staircase builds anticipation and, with just 34 seats, creature comforts are well catered for as you sink into the softly neutral dining room, with all shades of grey, splashes of gold and soothingly elegant floral arrangements, and flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling windows and cleverly placed mirrors. High on flavour, thought and inspiration, the cooking delivers the very best of contemporary French fine dining, setting out with Cévennes onion ravioli with winter vegetables and a crystal-clear bouillon – a deceptively simple dish that belies the technical skills involved. Main-course roast chicken arrives perfectly caramelised with a mini pie on the side, as well as full-on flavours from foie gras, Morteau sausage and kale.
