Upstairs at the Mill
"Highly skilled cooking with timeless meadow views."
Overview
The weatherboarded 18th-century Tuddenham Mill may have ended its grinding days in the 1950s, but its heritage remains intact for 21st-century diners in Upstairs at the Mill, where the original cast-iron wheel itself, framed by beams, glass walls and net curtains, forms a diverting centrepiece to the first-floor restaurant. Part of the luxurious boutique hotel, the location is peaceful and bucolic, and the history-steeped building is an instantly captivating prospect. The fast-flowing stream that once turned its waterwheel has been dredged of silt and is now a thriving wildlife habitat, and the ceiling is crossed by the same oak beams under which generations of hardworking corn millers once laboured centuries ago. The space is flooded by daylight through the large windows that overlook a tranquil millpond, and at night lamps and spotlights combine with a stylish contemporary interior to create a relaxed ambience and a suitably unique setting for chef Lee Bye’s assured cooking.

About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men
