The Checkers
"Market town pub with spot-on modern cooking."
Overview
Run by Andrew and Rachel Birch, The Checkers is a handsome Georgian former coaching inn with an open-plan design and minimalist look. The modern British dishes are complemented by reasonably priced wines to match each course of the tasting menu. A typical meal might begin with Cornish bluefin tuna tartare, ponzu, yuzu and sesame. Next, line-caught halibut makes an appearance with laverbread and dill butter sauce, or perhaps Creedy Carver duck breast, braised salsify, fig and balsamic vinegar catches the eye.
