Antony House
Overview
Antony House is a fine, largely unaltered mansion, built in brick and Pentewan stone for Sir William Carew between 1711 and 1721. The stable block and outhouses remain from an earlier 18th-century building. The house contains contemporary furniture, paintings and textiles. Among the artworks on display are paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, and a painting of Charles I during his trial. The grounds include a dovecote, the National Collection of Daylilies and the Bath Pond House. The Woodland Garden, owned and run by the Carew Pole Garden Trust, also has outstanding rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and camellias. Antony House was used by director Tim Burton, as a film location for his version of Alice in Wonderland.
